Florence, currently in his rookie year on the ASP WCT, proved unstoppable on the final day of Billabong Rio Pro competition, topping prodigious Australian Julian Wilson (AUS), 23, and Josh Kerr (AUS), 27, on his way to triumph over Parkinson.

"The funniest part about this wave is how shallow this end section is. It’s craggy rock with barnacles. After ever air you try, whether you fall or pull it, you take three waves and have to starfish and watch your friends do airs. I did this big double-grab on one and looked over and John was starfishing in front of me, then I joined John on the reef dry-docked and we watched Matt punt a huge one."
