This segment showcases the surfing of Kolohe just before his injury, which has seen him completely dry for over two months now. Speeding combinations of fierce, on rail wraps, technical airs and fin free lip work on single waves are what separate young Andino from the pack. Testing a few different rockers and outlines, things were coming together on a few new design elements at the time, only to be put on the back burner until his recoup is done. The line up, and my daily work at the factory, are not nearly the same without him. Can't wait to see him back in the water, picking up where we left off. - Matt Biolos

Less than one week away, the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) will kick off its National Championships summer marathon with the 35th annual National Interscholastic Surfing Championships presented by Nike. Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point, California will again play host to the nation's largest and highest profile interscholastic team surfing event. 2012 marks the twelfth consecutive year that the National Interscholastics have been staged at Salt Creek, one the sport's most picturesque and high performance surfing arenas.

A total of 40 teams and over 350 surfers will contend for National Championship titles in both team and individual categories which includes male, female and longboard divisions. Each team is composed of 9 surfers consisting of 6 males, 2 females and 1 longboarder. Rivalries are the best part about any team sport and we have plenty of them here. For three short days in June of every year, the teams come in, play their best and the victors go home as National Champions for the year. In 2011 the champions were Mira Costa College, San Clemente High School (Varsity), Huntington Beach High School (Junior Varsity) and Shorecliffs Middle School. Which team will bring home a national championship in 2012?
Action will kick off Saturday, June 16th with the National College Championships dominating the entire day of competition and will conclude with finals in all college categories. For the second consecutive year, the NSSA College Championships will be run in conjunction with The Alt Games: College Action Sports Championships on CBS Sports Network (see below for more information).

The High School and Middle School Championships will hit the lineup on June 17th and will definitely offer a power packed day of competition. The following day June 18th will feature continued preliminary rounds and finals of the National High School and Middle School Championships.

CBS SPORTS ALT GAMES EXCLUSIVE COVERAGE
For the second consecutive year, the NSSA College Surfing Championships will be featured on national television as part of CBS Sports Network's coverage of The Alt Games: College Action Sports Championships. Surfing action debuts Friday, July 13 at 9:00 PM, ET and highlights from the Championships will also be part of a special one-hour show airing on the CBS Television Network on Sunday, August 12 (1:00-2:00 PM, ET).
SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., May 29, 2012 — The 2012 Oakley Surf Shop Challenge presented by SURFER Magazine makes stop No. 4 at Newport Beach’s 54th/56th Streets on June 1 for the West Regional Qualifier. Almost 300 surfers from 70 shops around the United States will compete at seven regional qualifying events vying for an all-expense paid trip to the eighth and final event, the National Championship in Bali, Indonesia, in October. The all-new Oakley High School Surf Team Challenge will run on June 2 and crown the top high school team in the region.

The event series pits four-man teams-two surf shop pros and two shop employees-against each other for a chance to win $10,000, an advertising spread in SURFER Magazine, and the title of best surf shop in the country. An exciting addition for 2012, Oakley has generously offered up an all-expense-paid trip to Bali, Indonesia, to compete at the National Championship event to the winning team of each region.

A notoriously competitive region, the West has been around since 2010 when it was divided from the Southwest region. The West region includes all of Orange and Los Angeles Counties while the Southwest covers all of San Diego County.

Last year’s West Regional Qualifier saw two Los Angeles County shops (Val Surf and Spyder) contend with two Orange County shops (Katin and Jack’s) in the final. Spyder, ultimately took the title, a big win for them considering they had been competing in the event for six years and never shown a good result. Katin earned second with 2005 Southwest Regional Champs and 2010 defending West Regional Champs Jack’s in third and Val Surf in fourth. But with the upped ante of an all-expense-paid trip to Bali for the National Championship, it promises to be a contentious battle again this year. Also watch for 2006 Southwest Regional Champs Huntington Surf & Sport. 2011 West Qualifier Video Highlights

2012 brings the addition of the Oakley High School Surf Team Challenge to the Southwest and West Regional Qualifiers, allowing the top 10 high school teams from each region to compete for the honor of a regional championship title, a $5,000 grand prize and Oakley prize pack and $1,500 from Muscle Milk. Muscle Milk will also award $1,000 to the “most spirited” high school team. Torrey Pines High School secured the Southwest win. For the West, the event will run on Saturday, June 2.

The list of 2012 invited West teams:

* Jack’s Surfboards
* Huntington Surf & Sport
* Surfside Sports
* T. Patterson Surfboards
* Katin Surf Shop
* Spyder Surf
* Laguna Surf & Sport
* Frog House
* Val Surf
* Killer Dana
* Becker
* ET Surf

Even with the departures of local favorite and ASP World Tour rookie Kolohe Andino and the re-energized Chris Ward, there's still a few chances for a San Clemente local to stand atop the podium with the $30,000 solid gold railroad spike trophy at this year's Nike Lowers Pro.

Goofy-footer Tanner Gudauskas won his Round 3 heat yesterday with the 2nd highest score of the contest and will surf in Round 4 against fellow goofy-footers Australian Mitch Coleborn and Floridian Cory Lopez as well as the regular-footed Brazilian, Raoni Monteiro. The top two finishers will advance to the no elimination Round 5 which features 3-man heats.

Tanner's ASP World Tour brother, Pat will surf his Round 3 heat today against competitors from New Zealand, Hawaii and France.

Perhaps most noteworthy of the 3 locals left in the event is darkhorse Jeff Lukasik who surfed through the trials and yesterday edged out 2011 ASP World Tour Rookie of the Year Julian Wilson to advance behind Coleborn to Round 4. Last year's winner, Miguel Pupo, was, at the time, relatively unknown on the international scene. Lukasik, the former Rip Curl GromSearch National Champ, could pull off a similar performance this year. First, however, he must get through a heat that includes 2 World Tour veterans including former ASP World Champ CJ Hobgood.

The Round 3 action continues today with Heat 15 featuring Dane Reynolds return to competition.
